2020 ISTANBUL 4th INTERNATIONAL FOOTWEAR DESIGN COMPETITION SPECIFICATION

PURPOSE

Istanbul Leather and Leather Products Exporters’ Association (“IDMIB”) organizes 2020 Istanbul 4th International Footwear Design Competition in Woman and Man Footwear categories with the purposes of rising of the creative power of the Turkish Shoe industry, strengthening the desire to create and sell original designs, encouraging talented young people and their our original designs, and gaining new designers rapidly in the sector.

IDMIB invites the designers to design the products that will determine the trends of the future, to create export-enhancing benefits with the perspective of revealing the impact of energy and enthusiasm of summer on shoe designs.

I. COMPETITION CATEGORIES

  • Woman Footwear Category
  • Man Footwear Category

The competitor may apply to both categories with separate files, but may participate in the competition with one file in the same category. If two files in different categories of a competitor qualify for the final, the competitor will be able to participate in the final with a single file of his/her choice.

The design of the products will be evaluated in accordance with the criteria of functional richness, usability, suitability for production, cost, innovation, creating added value and creating competitive power for export as well as aesthetic concerns. In this context, the harmony of all the project presentations and reports to be prepared with the theme and the alignment of the materials to be used with the main theme in the specification will be evaluated meticulously.

II. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

IN WOMAN AND MAN FOOTWEAR CATEGORIES;

1. The candidates will participate in the competition are required to meet the following conditions;
a- To be older than not over 35 years of age as of 01/01/2020,
b- Not to be a partner, deputy or first-degree relative of any of the jury members,
c- Not to have participated in any phase of jury works,
d- Not to be working in the organization that organizes the competition, or not to be a first-degree relative of someone who works in the organization that organizes the competition,
e- To be in compliance with the possible conditions to be specified in the competition specification,
f- Not to be qualified previously for the first 3 degrees in Detail Leather Products Design Competitions and Footwear Design Competitions organized by IDMIB.
The projects which do not comply with these requirements are deemed to have not participated in the competition.

2. The competition is open to the participation of the persons who have graduated from the shoe industry departments of High schools and document it, the persons who can document that they are students of associate degree or undergraduate degree in any department, the persons who have graduated from any department of universities (the persons who have received graduate education may also apply) from Turkey or abroad. The persons who have received the necessary training from the company in which they work on design and who have the design authority can also participate in the competition.

3. For each project participating in the competition, the requirements of “originality”, "not being previously awarded in any competition” and “not already designed, manufactured and offered for sale” shall be sought. If otherwise determined and this determination is approved by the majority of the jury members, the project in question and any other applications of the competitor/competitors applying for the competition with this project shall be excluded from the competition. If the project was awarded, together with the prize awarded, all prizes awarded to the competitor/competitors who applied to the competition with this project shall be requested back, if any, by the General Secretariat of ITKIB. Otherwise, the necessary legal actions shall be taken.

4. In case of cancellation of an award-winning project, the same award and rights shall be transferred to the next design with the most votes after the project in question and the change made shall be announced on the website where the competition is announced (www.ayakkabitasarimyarismasi.com).

III. WHO CANNOT PARTICIPATE?

As a general rule, those who were qualified for the first 3 degrees in the Detail Leather Products Design Competitions and Footwear Design Competitions organized by IDMIB, ITKIB employees, and those who have intimate relations with the jury members or who work in the same organization may not participate in the competition. Competitors who have previously participated in the competition 3 times may not participate in the competition again.

In addition, the persons who are a famous name or brand in the Turkish fashion environment, the persons who have a registered commercial company, trademark, and the persons who have a commercial sponsor cannot participate in the competition.

IV. THE RULES OF THE COMPETITION AND WHAT EXPECTED FROM THE COMPETITORS

The drawing and expression rules required to participate in the "Istanbul 4th International Footwear Design Competition" are listed below:

The competition specifications, conditions for the participation in the competition and all documents related to the competition shall be obtained from the web page and the application for the competition can be made via mail. The competitors shall complete 6 required application documents listed below and submit them together with the application file;

3) Idea Sheet
4) Résumé
5) Copy of ID document
6) Letter of Commitment

Each project shall include the appearances that clearly define the basic principles of design and explain their applications. The projects shall consist of 4 different models on a single base.

Each competitor may create his/her design in A3 size with the desired technique. They can prepare their presentation files with color and material suggestions on proportional and white background. The designs can be prepared and colored by a computer software or hand drawn.

Following the preparation of all the "Application Documents" in full and receiving them by the Secretariat General of ITKIB, each competitor shall be provided with an application number and it shall be confirmed that the application has been received and accepted by the Secretariat General of ITKIB. The competitors who do not receive this number shall not be deemed to have made an application.

In the Second Phase, the three-dimensional designs (with 300 dpi, 24 Bit color depth and in JPEG format) of the projects selected by the Jury Members may be required to be submitted on white ground and as sized following their technical development.

The competitors must fill in the address, telephone, fax and e-mail address sections in the “Application Form” in full and accurately. The identities of the competitors will be known only by the “Competition Secretariat” for the purposes of checking compliance with the competition conditions, preparing necessary lists and carrying out the preparation activities of the competition in the First Stage, and they will be known by the “Jury Members” as well in the Second Stage that will make an evaluations in order to select the designs that will be awarded. All designs qualified for the Second Stage shall be evaluated by the “Jury Members” together with their identities.

The "Idea Sheet" shall be in the form of a 1-page written text describing the idea of the project in writing, explaining at what point the proposal brings an innovation, to what extent it creates added value and the material of the product and method of production. The "Résumé" shall consist of no more than 100 words.

The competitor may apply to both categories with separate files, but may participate in the competition with one file in the same category. If two files in different categories of a competitor qualify for the final, the competitor will be able to participate in the final with a single file of his/her choice. They will not be able to apply to the competition with their designs with which they participated in the Footwear Design Competitions that we organized previously. If such a situation is detected, the design will be disqualified from the competition and if the prize is awarded, the prize of the competitor will be canceled along with the other prizes, if any, awarded to him/her, and those given him/her will be taken back.

The names, contact details and identities of the competitors will be known only by the Competition Secretariat in the First Stage and, beginning from the Second Stage, by the Jury Members.

Each designer participating in the competition allows the exhibition of the designs within the terms of this specification.

Note: The files that do not pass the first stage shall not be mailed to their owners by ITKIB and the participants who want their file will have to take delivery from ITKIB Leather Sector Branch in person. The files that do not qualify for the final, shall be stored for three months from the competition final night, and the files that are not received shall be destroyed at the end of this period.

DELIVERY OF APPLICATION FILE

The names of the applicants should not be written on the designs/sheets/drawings. No description or sign indicating the identity of the applicant should be found in any part of the design elements. The application file number shall be provided by ITKIB in the application. The competitors shall submit their application documents and designs enclosed in a project bag of A3 size.

The application files must be delivered to the ITKIB Leather Sector Branch by the end of working hours of Thursday, April 30, 2020 at the latest by hand or via cargo. Internet application is not accepted. The application files, which are prepared with incomplete documents, non-compliant with the technical requirements, delivered after the deadline are not taken and submitted for evaluation.

V. STAGES OF THE COMPETITION

Application Stage

At this stage where the basic principles of the designs are established, each competitor may create their designs in A3 size with the desired technique. The competitors can prepare their presentation files with color and material suggestions on a sized and white background. The designs can be prepared and colored by a computer software or hand drawn. The projects shall consist of 4 different models on a single base.

First Stage

The first assessment of the application files shall be made on Tuesday, May 05, 2020. A sufficient number of projects deemed appropriate by the Jury Members from each category shall be selected to participate in the second elimination. Prior to the second elimination, it may be requested to develop the designs on the computer in terms of both basic principles and technical aspects by giving sufficient time. The competitors qualified for the second elimination shall present their project orally to the jury. The interview with the competitors may be conducted via teleconferencing or video. Detailed announcement regarding those who qualified for the second elimination shall be made via the website (www.ayakkabitasarimyarismasi.com).

Second Stage

5 designs from each category that will advance to the final shall be selected by the Jury Members, which is composed of the leading names of the sector, in the second stage assessment to be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2020. The designs selected after the second elimination shall be converted into products by the technical sponsors together with the competitor to compete in the final, the name of the competitor shall be referred to together with the manufacturing company. Manufacturer companies can be determined by IDMIB, however, the competitors can find their own technical sponsors.

4 designs submitted by 5 finalists qualified for the final from the Woman and Man Footwear categories will be produced under the sponsorship of IDMIB by the manufacturers deemed appropriate by IDMIB, however, the production process, including time planning, shall be produced under the supervision and responsibility of the competitor. The designers are obliged to follow up the production in the manufacturing process. The accommodation of the finalists during the production process of the designs shall be funded by IDMIB for a maximum of 7 days.

IDMIB is not responsible for the delays in the production of designs. The products in question shall be exhibited with a special presentation on the final night. The finalists shall be posted in the website www.ayakkabitasarimyarismasi.com. IDMIB reserves the right to change all dates specified.

Jury Special Presentation and Final Night

On Tuesday October 13, 2020, a preliminary presentation shall be made to the jury members determined by IDMIB with the aim to determine the winners. In the final, the designs of 5 finalists from Woman and Man Categories shall be presented with a special presentation to the jury of final consisting of local and foreign press members, academics and representatives of the sector leading the leather sector and to the distinguished guests. The designs shall be evaluated on a category-basis and the designers who are qualified for the top three of each 2 categories shall be determined. The evaluation and results shall be announced in the final night on October 13, 2020. The dates of jury special presentation, final night and award ceremony can be changed by IDMIB.

VI. AWARDS

WOMAN FOOTWEAR CATEGORY

Those qualified for the first 3 of this category shall be awarded 6 months of foreign language education in the country (provided that to be in the institution to be determined by IDMIB and with the requirement of 90% attendance rate). The competitor/competitors who are awarded the Overseas Education can benefit from the language education that they will receive in Turkey for 1 year.

The competitor who is first place winner shall be awarded TL 30,000, the second place winner TL 20,000, and the third place winner TL 10,000.

MAN FOOTWEAR CATEGORY

Those qualified for the first 3 of this category shall be awarded 6 months of foreign language education in the country (provided that to be in the institution to be determined by IDMIB and with the requirement of 90% attendance rate). The competitor/competitors who are awarded the Overseas Education can benefit from the language education that they will receive in Turkey for 1 year.

The competitor who is first place winner shall be awarded TL 30,000, the second place winner TL 20,000, and the third place winner TL 10,000.

OVERSEAS EDUCATION AWARD

In case of approval of the competition and the competitors from the quota of the right to study abroad by the Ministry of Commerce within the framework of the communiqué no. 2008/2, “Right to Overseas Design Education” shall be provided to the names among the 3rd place winner competitors who are deemed appropriate by the Ministry on the Final Night. (Subject to the preliminary approval of IDMIB, with the support and approval of the Ministry of Commerce). The competitors who are awarded the overseas education award must use this right within 2 years at the latest, otherwise they will be deemed to have waived this right. The foreign language proficiency certificate (IELTS, TOEFL, etc.) necessary for the competitor to start the Overseas Education must also be provided by the competitor.

Foreign participants cannot benefit from the Overseas Education Award pursuant to the communiqué no. 2008/2. Foreign participants shall be deemed to have accepted this issue by participating in the competition.

NOTE 1: To spread the culture of design and innovation in Turkey and to enable more designers to benefit from the supports provided for this purpose, a designer who is awarded as the first place winner in any category of a design competition organized by a cooperation organization will not be able to benefit from any of the awards for two years even if he/she is awarded a degree in a design competition organized by a different cooperation organization in the same sector.

NOTE 2: In order to benefit from the Overseas Education Award, the competitor must be in the description of a designer. In the Communiqué No. 2008/2, the Designer is described as “Turkish designers who are members of the relevant professional organization according to their field of activity or who have received higher education in design or design related fields”.

* IDMIB reserves the right to make changes in all awards specified above.

VII. DESIGN RIGHTS AND SETTLEMENT OF THE DISPUTES

According to the “Decree Law on the Protection of Industrial Designs” which came into force on 27 June 1995, all designers participating in the competition have the right to apply to the Turkish Patent Institute and obtain “Industrial Design Registration Certificate” for their designs (at their own expense) in order to protect their designs which have “new and distinctive features”. The designers who wish may apply to the Turkish Patent Institute, at the address Hipodrom Cad. No:115 Yenimahalle 06330 Ankara.

The Exporters' Associations, which organize and finance the competition, reserve the right to exhibit the competition exhibition in different cities and countries. The Exporters' Associations, which organize and finance the competition, shall have the right to publish, archive and exhibit all the projects participating in the competition indefinitely. On the other hand, it declares to the participants with this document to ensure the security of the works and all documentation.

The sheets of designs that did not qualify for any degree can be obtained from the General Secretariat of the Istanbul Textile and Apparel Exporters' Association after the competition. The General Secretariat of the Istanbul Textile and Apparel Exporters' Associations shall not be held responsible for the design sheets submitted to this competition which are not taken back during this time.

For the commercial use of any design participating in the competition, it is necessary to obtain the permission of the designers. By observing the priority rights of the members of the Exporters' Associations and the sponsoring companies which organize and finance the competition, they may attempt to purchase the projects they find appropriate. Therefore, the members of the specified Associations and the sponsoring companies have the “priority” and “pre-emption right” on the awarded projects for 6 months from the announcement of the results of the competition.

The Exporters' Associations, which organize and finance the competition, may produce one or more sample models and may exhibit these models temporarily or permanently for the exhibition of the designs participating in the competition that they deem appropriate.

The designs produced of the finalists will be maintained by IDMIB for 1 year after the competition. If the design owners do not receive their designs from IDMIB at the end of the 1 year, these designs will be destroyed. No claim for damages or compensation can be made from IDMIB under any name because of the designs that are not taken and destroyed at the end of this period.

Unless otherwise stated by the competitors, the names of the participants may be announced and published in conjunction with their project. In the event that the phrase “DISCLOSABLE” is written on the designs of the competitors, the projects in question will be exhibited with the designer's name and educational information at the end of the competition, and this phrase also means that the designer/designers deem it appropriate that the design is included in the exhibition, the books and catalogs to be prepared with the designer's name, contact information and headshot photo and that the photos to be taken in the award ceremony is published when necessary. The phrase "UNDISCLOSABLE" means that the identities are only closed to the media and public, but does not mean that they are closed to the Competition Secretariat and, after the Second Stage submission date, to the Jury members; in case of mentioned phrase, the images of the competitors' designs will be displayed in the exhibition, booklets and catalogues to be prepared at the end of the competition, but not their names, contact information or headshot photos. The envelopes with no phrase on them shall be deemed as openable, and the work owners shall be included in the exhibition, booklets and catalogs to be created at the end of the competition with their clear identities.

The legal responsibilities arising from the fact that the designs participating in the competition are not original do not bind the Exporters' Associations, which organize and finance the competition. The competition shall have all the responsibility. In such cases, after making necessary determinations, the prize of the competition is canceled and the prize awarded is taken back. The canceled project and any other applications, if any, of the competitor/competitors who applied to the competition with the project in question will be disqualified from the competition. If the project was awarded, together with the prize awarded, all prizes awarded to the competitor/competitors who applied to the competition with the project in question shall be requested back, if any, by the General Secretariat of ITKIB. Otherwise, the necessary legal actions shall be taken.

In case of cancellation of an award-winning project, the same award and rights shall be transferred to the next design with the most votes in the theme and category after the project canceled and the change made shall be announced on the website where the competition is announced.

Where it is deemed necessary with the joint decision of the Jury Members and in respect of the usefulness of the competition, the changes may be made in the conditions of the number of prizes and prize numbers of the competition, including the transfer of the designs from one theme to another, during the First Stage, Second Stage or the Award Ceremony.

If the amount of the prize awarded to the designer in the competition exceeds the tax limit according to the law of the Republic of Turkey, the designer concerned shall have the liability for the tax should be paid.

The competitors who participate in this competition through the web site (www.ayakkabitasarimyarismasi.com) and receive an approval number after the confirmation are deemed to have accepted all the conditions set out by this specification.
